A major miracle for Emily Dickenson scholars has just happened. A daguerreotype from around 1859 was brought by a collector to Amherst College in 2007, and after years of research and investigation, the College is fairly certain this is truly an image of the poet as an adult.
Not only that, but she is sitting with her friend Kate Scott Turner and smiling happily. She’s just beautiful.
Nor was she the sickly, agoraphobic spinster (don’t you just loathe that word?) so many have imagined her to be.
I love stories like this. Especially when this image is so lovely. It brings Emily back to life.
